Home-based physiotherapy in pediatrics is an effective and appropriate way to support children in their rehabilitation while taking into account their familiar environment and proximity to their family. This type of care can be particularly beneficial for children with reduced mobility or for those for whom traveling to a clinic is difficult.

General Therapeutic Goals

The goals of home-based pediatric physiotherapy vary depending on the conditions or disorders being treated, but generally include:

  • Improvement of mobility and motor skills: The child is guided through exercises aimed at strengthening motor abilities, improving posture, and developing coordination.

  • Muscle strengthening: Specific exercises are designed to build muscle strength, which is essential for children with muscle weakness or delays in motor development.

  • Pain reduction: Through manual therapy techniques, stretching, or the use of equipment, the goal is to relieve pain associated with certain conditions or injuries.

  • Prevention of deformities or complications: In cases of chronic conditions or orthopedic disorders, physiotherapy helps prevent deformities or slow their progression.

  • Promoting autonomy: One of the main objectives is to help the child gain or regain functional independence, particularly for daily life activities.

  • Emotional and social support: By working in a familiar and safe environment, home care also provides emotional support to the child and reassurance to the parents, thus reducing anxiety related to medical interventions.

Conditions for Accessing Home-Based Care

To benefit from home-based pediatric physiotherapy, a medical prescription explicitly stating the need for home care is required. This prescription can be issued by a general practitioner, pediatrician, or specialist who evaluates the child’s situation and determines that treatment in a clinic is either impossible or impractical. Presenting this physiotherapy referral is therefore essential in order to arrange rehabilitation sessions at the child’s home.

This system ensures continuity of care while addressing the specific needs of children in an environment that supports their well-being and motivation.
